A Level Art and Design (Fine Art)

  • STRODE'S COLLEGE
  • LEVEL 3

Course Overview

A Level Fine Art offers students the freedom to explore a wide range of artistic disciplines, encouraging creativity, experimentation and the development of a personal visual language. Rather than specialising in a single area, students can work across a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, photography, digital processes, installation and mixed media.
Throughout the course, students will investigate the work of historical and contemporary artists, refine technical skills, and develop independent ideas through practical exploration and critical research. Emphasis is placed on creative risk-taking, problem-solving and the ability to communicate concepts visually.
This course is ideal for students who enjoy making, experimenting and thinking creatively. It provides an excellent foundation for further study in art, design, architecture, illustration, fashion, fine art and other creative industries, while also developing transferable skills in research, analysis, communication and independent learning.

This course is taught at the Strodes College campus in Egham, Surrey, where you will learn from experienced teaching staff in a supportive learning environment.

Course information

Over the space of two years, you will understand the basics of visual language by working in processes such as ceramics, drawing, painting, mixed media and 3D sculpture. The first year is very much focused towards skills development, so expect lots of practical workshops and experimentation. In the second year, you will naturally work more independently and will have the freedom to work with particular materials and processes.

2 Years

Fine Art is assessed through both coursework and an externally set, timed assignment. The coursework element is a personal investigation supplemented by written material and is worth 60% of your overall grade. The externally set, assignment takes place toward the end of the second year. You will undertake preparatory work based around a particular theme and then create a final (timed) piece or series based on your preparatory work.

Level 3 AQA GCE A Level in Art and Design

During your two years of study you will undertake a work placement. You will also hear from a variety of industry speakers, visit careers’ fairs and attend workshops, trips and visits.
