Course Overview

Counselling Concepts is a fast-track, intense course which introduces learners to counselling theories, develops an understanding of the context of counselling, and provides opportunities to demonstrate counselling skills. It aims to enhance and improve verbal and written communication skills, whilst providing learners with an understanding of what counselling is about, enabling them to compare and contrast this with other helping relationships.

The course is ideal for people who are to undertaking voluntary work, wanting to enhance career prospects with additional qualifications, or simply wanting to develop themselves. The professional development unit will improve self-awareness and will explore interactions with others. This is the first stage to becoming a qualified counsellor. Students who envisage becoming a professional counsellor may prefer to complete the one-year in-depth Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, which covers similar topics, but is more comprehensive.

Learners will cover the following units:
– The professional context of counselling
– Communication skills in helping relationships, where you will practice using these skills with your peers.
– Personal development
