Course Overview

The course is suitable if you enjoy analysing language in real world contexts and exploring how it changes, is learnt, is shaped and manipulated; the course has a lot to do about learning about life through language.

This subject gives you a fuller and more perceptive sense of how language is acquired and used in a number of real life contexts.

The course often draws on contemporary sources from the media and you will become skilled at closely analysing the changing patterns, structures and techniques used in various contexts.

Entry Requirements

Requires GCSEs in English language at grade 5, plus the standard entry requirements of an
A Level or mixed programme.

Course information

You will consider, amongst other things, how we learn to speak, how varying influences such as modern technology, gender and power shape language. In addition, you will trace the path of the English language and consider some of the contextual influences that have caused langugae to change as well as learn how to write effective arguments on topical langugae issues.

2 Years

In class, face to face.

Paper 1 – Two hours and 30 minutes – Exploring Language, worth 40% of the marks.

Paper 2 – Two hours and 30 minutes – Dimensions of Linguistic Variation, worth 40% of the marks.

Non-examined unit – An independent language investigation (2,500 words), worth 20% of the marks.
Academic Poster (1,000 words).

Level 3 OCR GCE A Level in English Language

During your two years of study you will undertake a work placement. You will also hear from a variety of industry speakers, visit careers’ fairs and attend workshops, trips and visits.
