Course Overview

A Level English Language and Literature presents clear continuity from GCSE English and GCSE English Literature with the study of literary and non-fiction written and spoken texts.

The course will develop your creativity and expertise by producing your own original writing. You will develop a clear understanding of the functions and usage of language for a variety of purposes and you will need to be a keen reader who is prepared to take on some challenging texts.

Entry Requirements

Requires GCSEs in English language and English literature at grade 5, plus the standard entry requirements of an
A Level or mixed programme

Course information

Over the course’s four modules you will study a range of texts drawn from famous works of literature, non-fiction writing, scripts, transcripts and graphic novels. You will be working with Shakespeare and Twitter feeds, The Great Gatsby and Jeremy Paxman. This will be combined with your own creative writing over three distinct exams and one coursework portfolio.

Exploring non-fiction and spoken texts:

Paper 1 – One hour exam – Anthology of texts, worth 16% of the marks.

Paper 2 – Two hour exam – The language of poetry and plays. Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience and Shakespeare’s Othello, worth 32% of the marks.

Paper 3 – Two hour exam – Reading as a writer, writing as a reader. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and creative writing task, worth 32% of the marks.

Independent study: analysing and producing texts – comparison of non-fiction writing and creative writing task, coursework, worth 20% of the marks.

Level 3 OCR GCE A Level in English Language and Literature (EMC)

During your two years of study you will undertake a work placement. You will also hear from a variety of industry speakers, visit careers’ fairs and attend workshops, trips and visits.
