Fiona Mactaggart MP joined local businesses for the first Slough Skills Forum on Wednesday (28th March) to discuss current and future skill needs in the town. Held at SEGRO's offices on the Bath Road, the event was led by East Berkshire College which announced the launch of the Business College Slough – a new dedicated training provision for businesses.

Speaking at the event, which was attended by representatives from companies such as Lonza and Unilever, Fiona said: "I welcome the advent of the new Business College Slough. We need businesses in the town to succeed and a well trained workforce is one key to success. This initiative should help companies of all kinds to meet their need for training."

The Business College Slough has been developed by the College in collaboration with SEGRO and multinational companies on the Slough Trading Estate, and will provide a dedicated skills and training offer for Slough's businesses to enable them to maintain a skilled and motivated workforce.

The Business College Slough will support the needs of local businesses by creating and delivering tailor-made training courses for their staff that meet today's business needs and provides accreditation to recognise individual achievements.

Founded by East Berkshire College, the project will use the latest skills delivery techniques to provide a unique 'pay-as-you-learn' approach to studying with flexible hours to meet the needs of businesses and individuals, and using tailor-made online content to underpin a face-to-face training experience. Employees can use the Business College to achieve new skills, enhance existing skills and even work towards a higher level qualification (e.g. HND or Honours Degree).

Courses can be created to meet the needs of the business and individual by picking from a wide range of units, covering everything from leadership and management, to scientific manufacturing and IT systems analysis. These modules are worth credits and count towards a recognised qualification.

Kate Webb, Principal of East Berkshire College, explains: "The Business College Slough marks an exciting new direction for the College and builds upon our success in providing education and training for Slough's young people and adults over the past 35 years. The Business College will focus on designing and delivering tailor-made Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for employees of Slough's businesses. It will provide a mix of eLearning, classroom interactions and self-study, alongside work-based development opportunities to exactly meet the skills needs for businesses."

The Business College Slough will also offer businesses a strategic skills analysis session to support them in defining the training and development needs for their staff. These interactive workshop sessions bring together specialists from the College with business professionals to explore and identify the progression routes and a development ladder for staff.

Neil Impiazzi, Partnerships Development Manager at SEGRO, says: "We're delighted to have supported the College in developing the Business College Slough concept and they should be congratulated on taking such an innovative approach to learning. As Europe's leading provider of flexible workspace, it is also fitting that our customers and their employees can now benefit from a flexible approach to training and development."

The Slough Skills Forum was the first in a series of discussions leading up to the opening of SEGRO's Aspire Centre in autumn 2012, where the Slough Business College will be located. The Aspire Centre will provide a dedicated training and skills facility for businesses, schools and the local community. Through strong business leadership, in partnership with local stakeholders, Slough Aspire will enable the local community to develop their skills that meet the needs of employers on Slough Trading Estate.
