Barry McGuigan opens new Boxing Academy at East Berkshire College

boxing 01East Berkshire College and former boxing world champion Barry McGuigan have launched a new Barry McGuigan Boxing Academy (BMBA) at the College’s Langley Campus at a prestigious ceremony attended by students, staff and visitors.

Boxing legend Barry McGuigan officially opened the academy with an inspirational speech, signed autographs and gave advice to budding young boxers. Meanwhile, Hayes and Slough amateur boxing clubs impressed with a series of dynamic boxing demonstrations in the ring.

The celebrations coincided with the College’s Open Evening and highlighted the sport as a route to learning and a way to achieve academic potential. The learners within the BMBA will benefit from six hours per week of professional coaching in the boxing centre whilst furthering their studies at the College.

Approved by the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA), the academy offers students the chance to study a full-time course whilst training to an elite level alongside professional coaches

Barry McGuigan said: “Currently there are close to one million young people nationwide not in education, employment or training, I strongly believe that young people need help, someone to believe in them and find their own talents.”
“In these challenging times, there is an even greater need to give young people the belief and a vision to succeed. I was given a chance through sport to fulfil my potential as I grew up, and I want through this programme to give others that chance. I have been very fortunate throughout my career and delighted that East Berkshire College is behind this new programme.”

Principal of East Berkshire College, Kate Webb, said: “We have an excellent reputation in sport and we always aim to provide our learners with the very best facilities and coaches to achieve their ambitions.  East Berkshire College is extremely proud to be working in partnership with the Barry McGuigan Boxing Academy and the ABA.

The BMBA is an innovative programme that works with partners across the educational and sporting sectors in England. The core BMBA concept is “The integrated development of non-contact boxing programmes with educational modules to reconnect disenfranchised 16 – 19 year olds to their self-esteem and ambition, using the disciplines of boxing to build self-belief, confidence, and motivation to engage with the world around them.”

Boxing programmes are open to males and females who enrol on any full-time course at the College. For more information, call East Berkshire College on 0845 373 2500 or visit
