Classic English cuisine celebrated at Zest restaurant

There was a sea of red and white bunting at Langley College on Thursday as our Zest restaurant held a special St George’s Day theme night to celebrate quintessential English cuisine.

From shepherd’s pie to Eton mess, the St George’s Day event saw the College’s talented catering students create a delicious range of dishes inspired by classic English food. Diners at the restaurant, which is open to the public for bookings, were treated to a mouth-watering menu at a pocket-pleasing price. The menu, which was specially created by Level 2 catering student Myron Bains, offered guests a three-course meal for just £17.95.

Doreen Court was one Langley resident who was dining at the restaurant for the first time and was impressed by the professionalism of the students:

“The restaurant is like a real bistro. The waiters are smartly dressed and polite, plus the food was cooked just right. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would recommend it to others.”

Millie Shepherd (17, from Maidenhead) was also dinning with her mother and grandmother on the same night. As well as trying out the restaurant, Millie was also there to see what she can expect when she starts her catering course at the College in September.

“Cooking is my passion”, says Millie. “I’m so looking forward to studying catering and gaining experience in a professional place. The restaurant here looks amazing, just like the real thing. The food was really good and reasonably priced.” 

Earlier in the day, Zest also played host to a special St George’s Day lunch for those students taking community courses at the College and their lecturers. The community courses are designed for those with learning difficulties and disabilities to help them develop their communication and social skills.

Providing a real work environment for students, the Zest restaurant at Langley College is open to the public and serves a range of delicious seasonal dishes at competitive prices. All food is cooked and served by talented students under the supervision of industry-trained staff.

The stunning new Zest restaurant is part of East Berkshire College’s Hospitality & Catering Academy in Langley. The academy works in partnership with patrons from some of the most prestigious restaurants, contract caterers and hotels within the region to provide students with the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business.

From professional cookery and food hygiene to front of house service, the new academy offers an array of full-time and part-time courses, including apprenticeships. The College also delivers a range of short courses including wine tasting, Italian cookery, bread making and Chinese cookery.
