Motor vehicle students from East Berkshire College were given an insight into different aspects of the automotive industry and tips on starting up a business from Refresh Autos Ltd, when they visited Langley College recently as part of a special enrichment programme.

The Reading-based mobile vehicle cosmetic repair company performed a series of demonstrations to over 100 students in Langley College’s extensive motor vehicle and engineering training centre. The workshops took place over five days and included a lesson in SMART repair techniques, including alloy wheel repair, as well as a talk on starting up and running your own business.

Andy Rose, Managing Director of Refresh Autos, said: “It is great that the College includes an aspect of SMART repair in their motor vehicle courses. I believe it is important that students see different aspects of the motor trade and local businesses can play an important role in educating them. I’ve been in business for five years and it is good to be able to pass on some of my experience to the next generation. I was impressed by the level of enthusiasm from the students, they were keen to get involved and asked lots of valid questions.”

Leoric Hinze (22, from Slough), who is studying a Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 3 course at Langley College, found the enrichment week particularly beneficial:

“The demonstrations were very interesting and it was good to hear first-hand from someone who has started their own business. It has really made me think about the different opportunities available after I leave college. There are a lot more routes you can follow in the industry than I first realised.”

Anthony McDonnell, motor vehicle lecturer at the College, explains: “We are always looking for innovative ways to teach and inspire our students. As part of our enrichment projects, we invited Refresh in to perform a series of demonstrations to broaden our students’ experience of the automotive industry.”

“It is great to have a local business give up their time in this way to help provide our students with an insight into another area of the trade besides that of automotive technicians and receive some useful advice on becoming self-employed.”

Langley College has an extensive purpose-built motor vehicle and engineering centre, which features the latest industry-standard equipment and materials. The motor vehicle facilities include a dedicated autotronics lab and the latest autologic diagnostic equipment, while the College has recently invested £70,000 in a state-of-the-art CNC Milling machine with computer simulators for its engineering workshop.
