From fiery science experiments and creative nail art to face painting and a miniature farm, there was an extravaganza of activities to entertain and educate visitors at East Berkshire College’s Windsor College on Saturday (11th May)

Over 640 visitors enjoyed a host of demonstrations, games and stalls at the College’s first Summer Fun Day in St Leonards Road. With something for all the family, this free community event saw college students and staff showcase their talents in an array of interactive demonstrations and displays.

Highlights of the day included a bouncy castle, petting farm courtesy of Farms2Ewe, treasure hunt, face painting, mask making, inventors’ competition, hairdressing, a musical medley from performing arts students, various arts and crafts activities and a charity cake sale. Meanwhile, the air was electric in the science laboratories with a series of fiery experiments including an erupting volcano, ‘screaming jelly babies’ and ‘flaming fruits’. The local Fire & Rescue Service also brought along a fire engine much to the delight of some budding young firefighters. EBC 2624 710px web

Juliet Holloway, Director of Learner Service and Communications at the College, explains: “We hold a series of Open Days at our Langley and Windsor colleges each year, but this is the first time we have held a Summer Fun Day for the whole community. As well as showcasing our extensive range of courses and facilities, the event has been a great opportunity to bring the community together and celebrate local talent. From science experiments to nail art and face painting to a treasure hunt, there was something to entertain and inspire those of all ages. All in all, the day was a tremendous success with a record number of visitors through the doors.”

A number of local businesses were also exhibiting at the event. These included The Dinky Fingerprint Company, Usborne Children’s Books and Love Noodle Jewellery.

Visitor Trish Canziani (from Maidenhead) was particularly impressed by the range of activities at the event. “I saw the Fun Day advertised and decided to pop along and see what it was all about. It’s been a brilliant day. It is great to have a range of activities to keep the kids occupied, so parents can find out more about the courses and talk to staff.”

Another visitor Fran Patterson (from Windsor) agrees: “I think the event is a great idea. There was definitely something for everyone here. I’ve been able to get my hair and nails done as well as find out about the range of courses available. There was also a lot for children to do like face-painting and a petting farm.”

Staff and students were also on hand to give visitors a guided tour of the facilities and answer questions on the College's extensive range of over 800 courses including apprenticeships.

Arunita Roy (18, from Slough) came along to the event to find out about computing and IT courses: “The College has a really good reputation, so I thought I’d come and check out the facilities here. As well as finding out about courses, I was even able to try out some fun experiments in the science labs and learn how different metals produce different colours when they burn.”

Over the years, East Berkshire College has continued to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and enhancing its range of courses. In February 2013, Ofsted rated the College as good with outstanding features following a week-long inspection. Alongside other key strengths, the report recognised the real difference the College makes to the lives of its students in terms of their progress, success and employability. EBC 2734 710px web
