What's covered?

Practical skills and how to analyse data, Particle Physics, Waves, Mechanics & Materials and Electricity. The A level material covered in the 2nd year takes in Further Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Fields and Nuclear Physics. There is then also an optional topic which we presently envisage as being Astrophysics.

What do you need?

At least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including at least a grade B or above in GCSE Maths and a grade B or above in Additional Science or GCSE Physics.

How you are assessed

The specification is no longer split into units, but has two terminal exams, each covering all topics in each exam. It is on the basis of performance in these two exams that the AS grade is awarded. If students progress to the 2nd year they will sit three terminal exams, each covering all topics studied in the 2 years, at the end of year 2. The a level grade will be based on the performance in these three exams.

What course next?

A Level Physics. Please note progression onto the 2nd year depends on gaining at least a D grade in the AS level. Also note the AS level no longer counts towards the A level qualification.

What could this lead to?

Advanced Apprenticeship, University Programme, Employment in many sector areas. However most students progress onto the A2 Physics course.
