This course is for learners that have completed the intermediate course or who have some experience in dressmaking having made a couple of simple pieces and are looking to develop their skills. You will also be competent in using a sewing machine. You will need to provide your own garment pattern, calico/mock-up fabrics (approx. 3 metres) and final fabrics (min approx. 3 metres), the cost of the which will be dependent on what you choose to purchase (calico is available to purchase from the college). All other equipment you need will be provided. You are welcome to bring along your own sewing machine if you wish.

Course information
‘Starting with selecting your own pattern, something suitable to your existing skill level, or you can challenge yourself by exploring a more complex design with the support and guidance from the tutor. Over the duration of the course, you will progress through basic pattern cutting and toiling (mock up making) which will culminate in the making of your final garment. This course is learner lead and 121 based, to get the most out of the course some of the work will need to be completed in your own time. This course is repeatable so you can bring a new project each time or work on a more complex project over a longer period.
The course includes:
-A recap of taking a series of measurements, adapting a pattern of your choice to match custom measurements.
– Tweaking the fit/design of your pattern, moving darts, seams etc.
– Intro to pattern cutting/adaption (changing up the design of your pattern).
– Making a mock-up/toile to check fit and develop your design further.
– Selecting appropriate fabrics for the final garment with tutor guidance when working with the fabric/s of your choice.
– Support with making your garment in final fabrics.
– Personalised mini workshops on relevant sewing tasks/samples.
– Implementing professional sewing & finishing processes for the final outcome.
2.5 hours per week, 8 weeks total
Classbased
The next course can be negotiated, some learners might like to make another item of clothing, and others might like to learn how to alter clothes. Progression to F/T BTEC Fashion and clothing possible following interview if you would like to study fashion in greater depth.
