Course Overview

Essential Digital Skills Qualifications (EDSQs) – Pearson EDSQ Level 1 is designed to help adults develop the essential digital skills needed for everyday life and the workplace. Aligned with the national standards for essential digital skills, this qualification supports learners in becoming confident and competent in using technology safely and effectively.

You can study for free if you:
– Are a UK resident
– Are aged 19 or over
– Do not currently have the essential digital skills needed in daily life or for work

Our experienced tutor will tailor the course to suit your needs, considering what you want to learn and how you plan to use your digital skills in real life.

You’ll be using standard classroom computers, but you’re very welcome to bring your own laptop or tablet if you prefer.

Course information

The course builds on the five key areas covered at Entry 3, exploring them in greater depth. Learners will develop practical skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as gain an understanding of digital well-being and how to use online collaboration tools. What is typically covered in each program is as follows:
Microsoft Word (Word Processing)
– Create and format documents such as letters, reports, or forms.
– Change fonts, headings, alignment, spacing, and layout.
– Insert and format images or tables.
– Use spell check and proofing tools.
– Save, rename, and organise documents in folders.
– Share or print documents when needed.

Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheets)
– Enter and edit data in cells.
– Use basic formulas for calculations (e.g. addition, subtraction).
– Create and format simple tables and charts.
– Adjust column widths and cell formatting (e.g. currency, percentages).
– Understand how spreadsheets can be used for budgeting or managing information.

Microsoft PowerPoint (Presentations)
– Create a basic presentation using slides.
– Add and format text, images, and other media.
– Apply design themes and transitions.
– Organise slides in a logical sequence.
– Save and present the slideshow

13 weeks – 3 hours sessions

The course will be delivered face-to-face in a computer room at the college.

Learners will have opportunities to practise their skills in various contexts before taking the on-demand assessment. The assessment is externally set, internally marked, and externally quality assured.

Learners will receive a Pearson Edexcel Level 1 Essential Digital Skills Qualification (EDSQ) certificate upon successful completion.

After completing this course, you’ll be ready to progress to the Essential Digital Skills Level 2 qualification.
