This month we spoke to the team at Moorland Heritage.
How has having an apprentice improved your team?
One of our missions as a business is to train the next generation, without them our industry would cease to exist. Our apprentices add tremendous value to our business, in that our skilled and experienced people are able to pass down their knowledge to the next generation. Seeing them learn new skills and put them into practice is a great feeling for not only the apprentices, but also those teaching them. As our apprentices have become more knowledgeable and progressed through their courses, they become increasingly more useful on site and enable us to grow.
In your opinion, what do you think makes a successful apprentice?
Being hard working, and easy to work with. We hear it all the time from our teams on site, they really are only looking for people that are keen to learn, and who want to work hard. Being present in the moment on site also makes a big difference, as the sites are often fast moving and dynamic, so the teams need the apprentices to be thinking about what they might need next and be ready to jump in and help at a moment’s notice. Don’t underestimate the academic side of your course work. Having a dep understanding of your trade will set you apart from others and enable you to grow faster and at a higher standard. There is a difference between doing a job, and knowing a job.
What do you think of Wayne, the skills coach who works with you and your apprentice?
Wayne is fantastic, he is very supportive to our apprentices and clearly cares about education and the industry. Our apprentices all like him very much and he is a great representative of the college.
What are the benefits of doing an apprenticeship with Moorland Heritage? We are a growing company, and we are fortunate enough to have a passionate and knowledgeable workforce.
