Course Overview

This course is for anyone interested in Media – especially if you haven’t studied these subjects before.

You will explore materials, methods and processes to produce art, design and media work as well as investigate 2D, 3D work as well as digital outcomes. You will also look at how these skills combine collaboratively to produce an outcome (artwork, film, animation, game).

Once you have completed this course you will be able to specialise in Art & Design or Media on one of our Level 2 courses.

Course information

1 Year

This course is highly practical. Students will learn through a combination of workshops and practical project briefs. You will learn about different elements of art, design and media and then choose a specialism for your Final Major Project (FMP). You will also have the opportunity to attend a range of trips and visits.

Coursework is internally assessed. We assess in a variety of ways including written work, portfolio building, Q&As, presentations, pitches, production development, attendance and punctuality and live productions.

A Level 1 UAL Diploma in Art, Design and Media.

Our Level 1 students undertake a week’s industry placement towards the end of the academic year. You will be well-prepared to go out into the world of work and to a destination suited to your individual progression. You may also get to work on live projects with college departments and external community groups across the year as part of our professional development sessions. We also invite visiting speakers to meet with you and give feedback on your work.

Progression to Level 2 Art & Design or Media Production (depending upon overall grade, attendance, skill and English and maths results on successful completion of the course).

This course is highly practical. Students will learn through a combination of workshops and practical project briefs. You will also have the opportunity to attend a range of trips and visits.
Essentials: you will need a washable apron and an old shirt to wear during practical projects.
Avoid wearing your best shoes or trainers!
Your kit list is:
-A plastic toolbox – to store your art materials (please stick to rectangle tool boxes not square storage boxes, as these don’t fit on our storage shelves). Max size: 40cm(L) x 21cm(W) x 20cm(H>)
-Glue stick (Pritt Stick)
-A selection of black & coloured fine liners
-A selection of pointed paint brushes – small, medium, large
-USB SD Card reader
-SD card (16Gb or larger)
-Eraser
-Pencil sharpener
-A basic sewing set – with pins, needles, small scissors and threads (can be sourced at pound shops).
-Something to use as a water pot, a plastic cup or empty yoghurt pot or small dessert ramekin dish, this will need to fit in your toolbox for storage.
-Car wash sponge
All Art & Design students pay an additional Studio Charge at Enrolment – this covers materials used in their exploratory lessons: paper, paint, ink, fabric, fabric dye, clay, wire, plaster etc.
Please note: Additional costs for materials may be required for all final outcomes and FMP’s or additional materials may need to be supplied by the student.
