Heat Pump Training

The Heat Training Grant is a UK government programme introduced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to help heating engineers develop the skills needed to install and maintain low-carbon heating technologies.

Created to meet the rising demand for qualified professionals in the sector, the scheme serves as a financial incentive to expand the workforce capable of supporting the nationwide rollout of heat pumps. Eligible applicants can receive up to £500 to contribute towards the cost of approved training courses.

The Green Skills Academy in Slough is delivering the following industry-recognised qualifications, designed for experienced heating professionals looking to expand into heat pump installation, commissioning and maintenance.

LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems (non-refrigerant circuits)

This 3-day qualification is designed for qualified heating engineers to gain competence in installing and maintaining ASHP systems. The course covers MIS 3005-I requirements, enabling MCS registration, and focuses on non-refrigerant circuits, including system design, safety, and commissioning.

LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Ground Source Heat Pump Systems (non-refrigerant circuits)

This 3-day qualification is designed for experienced heating engineers (plumbers, gas/oil engineers) to install and maintain ground-source heat pump systems in domestic and small commercial properties. The course covers MIS 3005-I requirements, enabling MCS registration, and covers design, component selection, installation, and commissioning of the non-refrigerant water-side circuit.

LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (Non-Refrigerant Circuits)

This 4-day course provides the knowledge and practical competence required to install, commission, service, and maintain heat pump systems, focusing specifically on the non-refrigerant components. Learners cover system design principles, hydraulic and electrical integration, system controls, health and safety, industry regulations, and fault diagnosis.

The qualification applies to both air and ground source heat pump systems, excluding refrigerant handling. Successful completion demonstrates competence in the installation and maintenance of heat pump systems and can support progression towards industry accreditation schemes such as the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), helping engineers expand their services within the growing low-carbon heating sector.
