What's covered?

This programme is designed for students wishing to progress to a higher level programme within the Motor Industry. It covers the advanced area of motor vehicle electronics, fault finding, engine and vehicle design and management within the industry. The HNC/HND comprises four mandatory units and a range of optional units. The mandatory units are: Analytical Methods for Engineers, Engineering Science, Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation and Engine and vehicle Design & Performance. Optional units will include: Electrical & Electronic Principles, Vehicle Fault Diagnosis, Vehicle Electronics and others.

What do you need?

Candidates must have completed a motor vehicle qualification or have significant experience in the Automotive industry. However, all candidates are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis. Ideally, candidates should have one of the following:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
  • An other Level 3 vocational or academic qualification
  • A GCSE profile which demonstrates a strong performance in a relevant subject
  • Related work experience in the motor vehicle industry

How you are assessed

Students will be assessed through written assignments and practical tasks in the workshop, appropriate to each unit.

How Long?

1 year for the HNC, followed by a 2nd year for the HND.

What course next?

Higher National Diploma in Automotive Engineering (Level 5)

What could this lead to?

Further study on the HND programme with possible progression to the second/third year of a degree programme. Alternatively, students could progress into a management position within the automotive industry.
