What's covered?

This programme is for those wishing to progress to a higher-level programme within the Motor Industry. It covers the advanced area of motor vehicle electronics, fault finding, engine and vehicle design and management within the industry.

The HND comprises mandatory units and a range of optional units.

The mandatory units are:

  • Analytical Methods for Engineers
  • Engineering Science
  • Project Design
  • Implementation and Evaluation
  • Engine and Vehicle Design & Performance

Optional units will include:

  • Electrical & Electronic Principles
  • Vehicle Fault Diagnosis
  • Vehicle Electronics

What do you need?

You must have completed a motor vehicle qualification or have significant experience in the automotive industry. However, all candidates are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

Ideally, candidates should have one of the following:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
  • Another Level 3 vocational or academic qualification
  • A GCSE profile which demonstrates a strong performance in a relevant subject
  • Related work experience in the motor vehicle industry

How you are assessed

You will be assessed through written assignments and practical tasks in the workshop, appropriate to each unit.

What could this lead to?

Further study on the HND programme with possible progression to the second/third year of a degree programme. Alternatively, students could progress into a management position within the automotive industry.
