Course Overview

This one year course is for candidates who want to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression into the carpentry and joinery trade. The carpentry and joinery topics covered are:

Health, safety and welfare in construction where an online exam will ensure that candidate knowledge can be applied.

Advanced principles of building construction information and communication, where knowledge is tested by an online exam.

Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools, where practical assessment is classroom based and theory has a formal in-class test.

Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools, where practical assessment is classroom based and theory has a formal in-class test.

Produce woodworking joints where practical assessment is classroom based and theory has a formal in-class test.

Course information

Topics covered: First and second fix; studwork; machine maintenance; wood science, including timber conversion & utilization ; practical assessments to bring students up to industry standard.

Two-thirds of this course consists of practical classes delivered by experienced tutors with a trade background in fully equipped workshops. Theory-based classes are delivered in college classrooms. Where necessary, classes are occasionally delivered virtually.

Practical assessments are conducted in workshops; theory assessments take place in the college’s dedicated exams room.

Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Site Carpentry

Level 2 students are expected to find an employer to do industry placement with for the duration of two weeks, with the support of a dedicated college office.

Working in the Construction industry, using skills in Carpentry & Joinery to gain further experience.
