Course Overview

The City & Guilds 3268 Level 1 Award in MMA Welding is designed for beginners and new entrants to the welding sector who wish to develop essential welding skills for employment or progression within the engineering and fabrication industries.

The course focuses on Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding and provides learners with a strong foundation in the safe use of welding equipment and practical welding techniques.

Whether you are completely new to welding or looking to formalise existing skills, this qualification offers extensive hands-on experience within a professional workshop environment, enabling learners to develop confidence and practical competence.
Throughout the programme, learners will gain the knowledge and practical skills required to safely prepare materials, set up equipment, and produce welded joints to an industry-recognised standard.

Learners will develop skills in:
o Safe working practices within a welding environment.
o Setting up and operating MMA welding equipment.
o Preparing materials and joint configurations for welding.
o Producing a range of welded joints using MMA welding techniques.
o Understanding welding terminology and basic welding principles.
o Inspecting and evaluating completed welds.
o Identifying common welding defects and methods of rectification.

Training takes place in fully equipped workshops and is delivered by experienced industry professionals, providing learners with the opportunity to develop practical skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

Course information

o Health and safety within a welding environment.
o Introduction to MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding processes and their applications.
o Welding equipment set-up, operation and shutdown procedures.
o Preparation of materials and joint configurations for MMA welding.
o Producing welded joints using MMA welding techniques.
o Visual inspection and assessment of weld quality.
o Identification and correction of common welding defects.
o Safe use, care and routine maintenance of welding equipment.

10 weeks per option taken, one evening per week

Practical workshop based training.

Assessment includes 5 test pieces and an oral assessment on overall processes.
