Course Overview

Sociology will give you a critical understanding of contemporary British social issues and the way in which society is structured. You will have the opportunity to study a number of different social theories and explore ways in which they can be applied to society to help us understand the way society functions.

You will learn the skills of extended evaluative and analytical essay writing, as well as research, debating and presentation skills. You will be challenged to explore and explain changes in contemporary society, both nationally and globally, and how sociologists have obtained the evidence for their theories. The topics studied are education and research methods, families and households, beliefs in society and crime and deviance.

Entry Requirements

Requires GCSEs in English language or English literature at grade 5, plus the standard entry requirements of an
A Level or mixed programme.

Course information

You will gain a critical understanding of contemporary British social issues and the way in which society is structured. You will have the opportunity to study a number of different social theories, like Post Modernism, Marxism and Feminism and explore ways in which they can be applied to society to help us understand the way society functions.

2 Years

At the end of the two year course you will sit three written examinations:
Paper 1 – Two hours (Education and theory and methods)
Paper 2 – Two hours (Families and beliefs)
Paper 3 – Two hours (Crime and Deviance, theory and methods)
