This month we spoke to the team at Frilford Heath Golf Club.
How has having an apprentice/apprentices in your team improved it?
Apprentices bring a high level of motivation and a real eagerness to learn. Their natural curiosity means existing team members step into mentoring roles, developing pride within the team for supporting apprentices’ development. Apprentices learn current best practices and have no “we’ve always done it this way” style thinking. They bring new ideas and ways of looking at things and help create a culture of continuous learning.
In your opinion, what do you think makes a successful apprentice?
Greenkeeping isn’t just a job, it’s a passion so someone who wants to take pride in their work along with a strong work ethic is key. Successful apprentices show a willingness to learn and are keen to ask questions and understand why tasks are done in certain way. A positive outlook and an enthusiasm for solving problems go a long way to being a good apprentice.
What do you think of the skills coaches who work with you and your apprentice?
The team at BCA are great with providing all our apprentices with the support and guidance they need. We’ve had several staff complete their apprenticeships in the last 5 years and look forward to developing more apprentices with BCA.
Why do you think doing an apprenticeship is the right choice?
