Course Overview

This EDS (Essential Digital Skills) course is designed specifically for ESOL learners to support the development of both digital confidence and a clear understanding of essential digital terminology.
Throughout the course, you will be introduced to essential EDS vocabulary and concepts, enabling you to navigate technology with greater independence. This includes developing the skills required for everyday tasks such as using devices, accessing online services, communicating digitally, and understanding basic digital terminology used in education, work, and daily life.

This course is taught at the Slough & Langley College campus in Langley, Berkshire, with access to industry-standard facilities and industry-experienced tutors.

Course information

You will study essential digital skills, including how to use a computer safely and confidently. This includes understanding computer hardware (mouse, keyboard, screen), basic functions such as logging in and out, using a mouse and keyboard, and managing files and folders. You will learn how computers work, how to adjust settings, and how to keep your data safe using passwords and locking your device.
You will develop practical skills in Microsoft Word, including typing, formatting text, creating documents, inserting images, and saving, printing, and organising files. You will also learn how to use email (e.g. Outlook) to send, receive, reply to messages, open attachments, and extract information.
In addition, you will learn how to use the internet safely, browse websites, use links and bookmarks, complete online forms, and create and manage an email account. You will also gain experience taking screenshots on computers and mobile devices.

once per week for 13-weeks

The course will be delivered face-to-face in a computer room at the college.

An end-of-course assessment will be conducted to determine your progression route.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a college certificate

Based on the assessment outcome, you will progress to either the EDS Entry Level 2 or Entry Level 3 course.

You must be an ESOL learner at Entry Level 3 or above.
