SLOUGH & LANGLEY ESOL CELEBRATED AS NATIONAL FINALIST AT EXCELLENCE IN ESOL AWARDS

News overview

The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) team at Slough & Langley College has been recognised nationally after reaching the final of the prestigious The Bell Foundation Award for Excellence in ESOL.

The college was shortlisted for its innovative “Equipping ESOL Learners Further: Pathways to Progression” project, which focuses on raising aspirations and supporting learners to achieve key qualifications in English and Maths.

Although the college narrowly missed out on the top prize, being named a finalist highlights the significant impact the ESOL team is having on learners across the community.

CREATING CLEAR PATHWAYS FOR SUCCESS

The project demonstrates how colleges can create meaningful opportunities for ESOL learners by setting high expectations and providing clear progression routes.

At Slough & Langley College, tailored learning pathways have been developed for different age groups, including:

– 16–18 learners

– Young adults aged 19–25

– Adult learners

These structured pathways ensure that students receive the right level of support at every stage of their learning journey, helping them move forward into further study, employment, or wider participation in community life.

GCSE SUCCESS FOR ESOL LEARNERS

A key feature of the programme is encouraging learners who are ready to work towards GCSE English and Maths, giving them the same qualifications as many native English speakers.

This is made possible through:

– Flexible timetables

– Dedicated GCSE classes for ESOL learners

– Close collaboration between ESOL specialists and mainstream subject teachers

Learners say studying for GCSEs alongside their ESOL programmes builds confidence and a sense of equality, while also helping them see clearer routes into higher education and careers.

The college has reported strong results, with good GCSE pass rates and many learners progressing quickly through ESOL and functional skills levels.

BUILDING CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING

To further support learners, the college has introduced a Cultural Capital programme, designed to help students understand the cultural references and background knowledge that may appear in GCSE exam questions.

This initiative aims to help learners:

– Better understand exam contexts

– Feel more confident in assessments

– Develop stronger critical thinking skills

While the programme is still relatively new, it is already helping learners feel more prepared and engaged in their studies.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM ASSESSORS

Judges at the national awards praised the programme’s impact on learner confidence and integration. Assessors commented:

“Learners said it supported integration as they were studying subjects that those with English as a first language also studied and at roughly the same age.”

RECOGNITION FOR OUTSTANDING WORK

Reaching the national final is a significant achievement for the ESOL team at Slough & Langley College and reflects the college’s wider commitment to inclusive education and high aspirations for all learners.

By supporting ESOL students to achieve recognised qualifications and progress into further opportunities, the college continues to play an important role in transforming lives across the local community.
