Course Overview

Performing Arts at BCA focuses on the development of acting, voice and dance skills – the triple threat! For dance we explore technical jazz, commercial, tap. We explore several performance genres including plays, physical theatre, comedy, movement and musical theatre.

We also take part national competitions such as ‘Dance Live’ and ‘National Conenctions’. Our second-year students have the oportunity to peform in a professional theatre setting too!

The course aims to prepare students for their next steps beyond post-compulsory edication and our students often move into employment, university or drama school.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above. One of these must be English or maths.

Some previous drama, dance and/or singing study would be advantageous but...

Course information

Year 1 – focuses on developing a wide range of performance skills.

Dance technique including – Jazz, commercial, contemporary and musical theatre.

Singing technique including – vocal techniques for musical theatre, pop and audition.

Acting -character development and journey, sub-text and audience relationship, phyiscality, acting through song.

Year 2 is focused on supporting students towards their next training or education goals, including UCAS and drama school applications, self tapes and audition material.
Students work on the production and performance of a full scale musical or play. Previous work includs Grease, Chicago, 9 to 5, Private Peaceful and a Variety Show.

2 Years
There is also the option to study for a one-year diploma qualification.

You will learn through a combination of lectures, practical workshops (dance, voice and acting), theory sessions, rehearsals, visiting practitioners, live community based projects, assignment work and self-guided learning.

To develop your knowledge and understanding, you will be invited to attend a minimum of 3 theatre trips each year.

You will be assessed through regular asessment that includes workshops, journalling, rehearsal, skills development sessions in voice, dance and acting, practical and written assignment work (essays, journals), project work and final performances.

UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts (Year 1), UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts (Year 2).

Our Level 3 students undertake a week of Industry Skills Development each year.

You will be well-prepared to go out into the world of work through seminar exploration and skills development sessions and to a destination suited to your individual progression.

You will also get to work on live projects with cross-college departments and external community-based clients as part of our professional development sessions. We also invite visiting speakers, industry professionals and agents to meet with you and to run specialist workshops.

Progress to higher education, stage-school, employment or apprenticeship.

Level 3

You will take part in live productions and this may involve evening and weekend rehearsal and performance time.

There is a trips, visits and competition contribution fee of £175.

Stationery:
You will need to supply your own personal stationery that includes: notebooks/journals, pens, pencils etc.

Uniform:
A uniform list will be provided on enrolment which will include a detailed list of uniform requirements. All items of clothing will need to be black and comfortable for practical work eg. black leotard, leggings, joggers and t shirt.
