Course Overview

This course will provide students with a great introduction to the Motor Trade and allow development and growth of industry expectations. The Motor Vehicle aspects of this course will be taught in the college’s workshops and technical classrooms. This course is Portfolio and various Online exams.

Those wishing to pursue careers in all aspects of the Motor Industry will benefit from this course as it will provide a good introduction to the motor trade covering a variety of roles and will cover the following units:
– Introduction to routine servicing.
– Automotive foundation skills.
– Health and Safety in the working environment.
– Engine principles.
– Lubrication systems.
– Cooling systems.
– Ignition systems.
– Exhaust and emissions.
– Suspension systems

Course information

Example units include: Health and safety for motor vehicle studies, Introduction to battery and lighting systems, Introduction to engine liquid cooling and engine lubrication systems, Introduction to engineering equipment and materials, Introduction to spark ignition power units, Introduction to steering and suspension, Introduction to vehicle braking systems, Introduction to vehicle exhaust systems, Introduction to vehicle ignition systems.

Students who complete their main programme with sufficient time will be offered a hybrid and electric vehicle safety training programme within your course. Alongside the above study, the programme will include GCSE maths and English Language.

Those who come to us with passes (Grade 4 and above) in English and/or maths will follow a Professional Development programme alongside their main study programme.

1 Year

The course is delivered through practical and knowledge based teaching. You will attend college 3 days each week.

Will include practical based assessments in the workshop and knowledge-based units, using E-portfolio and includes online exams for each unit.

City & Guilds Qualification: City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance. Students will gain the skills and knowledge for a support role in a motor vehicle workshop.

1 week – Students will complete 1 week (5 days) Employability
training in college.

This will include readiness to work training, talks
from the BCA careers department, mock interviews, CV writing etc

City & Guilds Qualification Progression: Progression onto the Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance or an apprenticeship. By the end of either course, you should be able to inspect and carry out standard maintenance on modern petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric-powered cars and light vans working with some supervision.

Level 2

You will require PPE for practical lessons, they are: Steel toe capped safety boots. Overalls. Safety glasses. For the knowledge sessions you will need the course workbook – more information about this at enrolment.

You will also require pen, paper and file for your practical and theory lessons. Lockers and workbooks are mandatory for all students and can be purchased via the College.
