Phase2 Innovation Hub
As part of its multi-million pound improvement project at Langley College, East Berkshire College is delighted to announce that it will be undertaking an internal refurbishment of its hair and beauty training salons and its teaching facilities for health and social care.

This second phase of investment will focus on upgrading the teaching facilities inside the south-wing of the existing Langley College building to provide students with state-of-the-art learning environments. These improvements will include new commercial hair and beauty salons on the ground floor, enhanced facilities for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, a simulated hospital environment for Health & Social Care and a brand new Innovation Lab.

Scheduled to open in early 2014, the new commercial hair salons will incorporate professional cutting stations, the latest industry-standard equipment and a new public reception area. As well as being a teaching facility for those studying hair and beauty courses, the salons will be open to the public and act as a working business to allow students to train on real customers for an enhanced learning experience. A range of treatments will be on offer to the public including hairdressing, massage, make-up, manicures and pedicures.

Principal Kate Webb explains: “The College is investing heavily in its facilities and services in response to the changing needs of the individuals, businesses and communities we serve.

This second phase of investment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible facilities for current and future students. We believe these improvements will enable us to deliver an enhanced level of education and training, to ensure local people have the chance to develop the very latest skills and techniques employers require.

“We are particularly excited about the creation of a new Innovation Hub, which will feature a state-of-the-art Innovation Lab to showcase applied maths and science in new technologies and product design development.”

The first phase of improvement works at Langley College, which includes a new Hospitality & Catering Academy, began in August 2012 and is now nearing the final stages of construction. Due for completion in August 2013, the academy will feature professional training kitchens and a working restaurant to enable the College to deliver full and part-time courses in hospitality and catering for the first time. 12-075 G91 EBC P2 BIM Training Hair Salon Persp 1-Lr

Langley College has been at the heart of the community since 1976 and currently serves over 2,400 students from the Langley and Slough area.

Over the years, the College has continued to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and enhancing its range of courses. In February 2013, Ofsted rated the College as ‘good’ with outstanding features following a week-long inspection. Alongside other key strengths, the report recognised the real difference the College makes to the lives of its students in terms of their progress, success and employability.

Today, Langley College is the centre for most of the College’s main vocational courses, which all have specialist facilities. These include Motor Vehicle & Engineering, Construction, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, Computing & ICT and Health Care & Education Pathways along with ESOL & Languages.

East Berkshire’s got talent!

creative catwalk_show_350pxAn 'out of this world' collection of hairdressing and beauty skills were on display at East Berkshire College's annual catwalk show in Langley recently.

The Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and Black Swan were among the wonderful and wacky student creations making an appearance on stage this year. Over 200 students took part in the show, with prizes for best make-up, hair and total look in each category.

As well as an array of stunning hair and make-up designs, visitors were treated to a high-energy dance routine and a magnificent medley of West End show tunes by performing arts students. Meanwhile, art and design students from the Langley Campus and retail and merchandising display students from Windsor Campus showcased an exciting exhibition of their work at the event.

Janet Yelloly, Head of School for Creative and Service Industries at the College, explains: "This show gets better and better every year. The standard of work across all areas and year groups was outstanding. This is the first time all the departments have worked together to produce the show. Each team has brought their own expertise to the project. For example, art and design students created the posters and tickets, while media students were responsible for lighting and visuals."

Student Whitney Hearn (17, from Burnham), who is studying a Beauty Therapy Level 2 course, impressed with her dramatic design inspired by the movie Black Swan.

"I was fascinated by the film and its powerful transformation of a woman into a swan," says Whitney. "I really admired the make-up, so I decided to use this as my theme. I have been preparing for the show for five weeks, but the challenge was to complete the makeover of my model in an hour."

The training salons at the College's Langley Campus act as a working business to allow students to train on real customers. A range of treatments are on offer to the public including hairdressing, massage, make-up, manicures and pedicures. For those interested in booking an appointment at the salon, please call 01753 793246.

careers taster_4911_400pxhAs part of National Colleges Week (26 September - 2 October 2011), East Berkshire College held a special Careers Taster Day at its Langley Campus on Wednesday 28 September.

The College held a series of 'bite-size' tasters in a range of subjects to give individuals the chance to try a new skill or trade and find out about the huge variety of courses available, including apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships.

A wide range of activities were on offer from bricklaying to hair styling, and motor vehicle maintenance to t-shirt printing. For those who wanted to try something more energetic, there were also drama games and non-contact boxing.

Melvin Osadolor (15, from Langley) was one of the visitors keen to try out some of the courses on offer at the College.

"I'm thinking of applying for the performing arts course next year, so I thought this taster event was a fun way to find out more. The drama workshops were great, especially the ones where we had to make up funny sketches about random items we were given."

Meanwhile, Nelson Ward (15, from Datchet) tried his hand at hairdressing and plumbing on his visit to the Langley Campus.

"It was great to actually have a go at the types of things you can do at college and see what it's really like. Plus, I've been able to speak to lots of different students about the courses."

As well as the taster sessions, visitors were able to find out more about college life, meet course tutors and receive free advice on careers, courses and financial support from qualified advisors.

For further information on East Berkshire College and its extensive range of over 600 courses including apprenticeships call 0845 373 2500.
