Langley College is working with Slough Borough Council to enable a raft of new rapid flow testing centres to open across the borough.  From Tuesday 19th January, residents will be able to book appointments or drop in at a new testing hub at Langley College Sports Hall, Langley Road.

Rapid testing, or community Covid testing, is available to anyone wishing to know if they have Covid but does not have Covid symptoms.  People administer the tests themselves and results are sent by text or email in under an hour.  The Langley College site increases capacity in Slough for rapid testing from one current hub operating at The Centre, Farnham Road.  Slough Borough Council will also be announcing the location of a range of mobile sites, which will be changing weekly.

Kate Webb, CEO and Group Principal of Windsor Forest Colleges Group, explained: “We felt it was absolutely right to work with Slough Borough Council and host the rapid testing centre at the college.  We wanted to be able to make our contribution to the fight against Covid in our local community and hope that the onsite testing hub can also play a vital role in getting our staff and students back on campus as and when that becomes possible.”

Councillor Natasa Pantelic, lead member for health and well being said: “The full mass testing programme has begun and I would encourage residents to take up the offer of these free tests.  For those who test negative, it can bring peace of mind and for those who test positive, it means they can take immediate action to protect themselves and their loved ones by isolating and ensuring they are no longer spreading it to others.”

Residents are able to book testing slots online or can drop into the testing centre on Langley Road from Tuesday 19th January.  The rapid testing hub cannot test anyone under the age of 12 or those who are still in the 10-day isolation period after being in contact with a Covid positive person. More information on rapid testing, why people should take part and the link to book an appointment can be found here.

ESOL Courses Now Free

Windsor Forest Colleges Group has decided to waive the fees on their English for Speakers of Other Languages courses (ESOL) to help those financially hit by the pandemic to continue learning. The courses, which are delivered at all three of the group’s colleges - Langley, Strode’s and Windsor, will now be completely free* for the remainder of the academic year 2020/21.

The CEO and Group Principal Kate Webb said, “We know under this current lockdown even more people are being furloughed, or are at risk of redundancy and are worried about committing money to pay for these vital courses. We have therefore taken the decision to waive the fees for the remainder of this academic year to ensure everyone can access the ESOL programmes without any financial barriers.”

The ESOL courses are aimed at people who have been resident in the UK for at least three years and who need to improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.  The part-time courses for adults, play a critical role in helping people improve their work and life opportunities by developing their day-to-day English language skills.

The courses are currently being taught online during the lockdown, so learners can join classes from the safety and comfort of their own home at no cost. The highly experienced ESOL team are providing support in how to get online for first timers and the college group is also providing additional support for those who can’t access devices or the internet.

People who are interested in taking advantage of this offer can enrol online and the College’s admissions team will make contact to complete the enrolment and provide information about how to join the courses.

*please note exam fees may be payable and the fees are waived for those who meet the residential eligibility criteria.
