Flying the flag for British cuisine as the World Cup starts, the newly opened Zest restaurant at Langley College held a sell-out British theme night on Thursday (12 June 2014). From a traditional beef and ale pie to a sumptuous Eton Mess, the Best of British Night saw the College’s talented catering students create a delicious range of dishes inspired by classic British cooking.

Diners at the restaurant, which is now open to the public for bookings, were treated to a mouth-watering menu at a pocket-pleasing price along with a classic Pimms cocktail. The menu, which was specially created by Level 2 catering students Jenna Driver, Chantel Haigh and Lucy Robbins, offered guests a three-course meal for just £15.

Catering student Chantel Haigh explains: “It was a really good night. Some of the customers really got into the spirit of things by dressing-up in British themed fancy dress costumes. The Eton mess sundae and the cocktails were particularly popular.” 

Providing a real work environment for students, the Zest restaurant at Langley College is open to the public and serves a range of delicious seasonal dishes at competitive prices. All food is cooked and served by talented students under the supervision of industry-trained staff.

First-time diners Paul and Andrea Williams travelled over from Windsor to check out the restaurant. Andrea explains: “I saw the article in the paper about the previous theme night and we thought we’d try it for ourselves. We were really impressed with the menu and the restaurant itself is beautiful. It was a lovely evening. We will definitely be coming back.”

After 35 years 10 former lecturers from Langley College, known as the ‘Langley Lovelies’, were reunited at their former workplace for a special celebratory lunch recently. The ladies, many of whom worked at the College when it first opened in the late 1970s, returned to the campus in Station Road to see the new look facilities and enjoy a three-course lunch created by current catering students.

The lovely ladies, who are all aged between 60 and 80 years old, shared anecdotes and photos from their time working at the College with each other and current staff. While, former English lecturer and one time press officer, Gwyneth Alcock, revealed she has collected over 10 books of press cuttings documenting the history of Langley College.  

The College’s new Zest restaurant played host to the reunion with level two catering students creating a variety of impressive dishes for the auspicious occasion. Meanwhile, level one students were responsible for serving the special guests. In addition to the lunch, the ‘Langley Lovelies’ were given a guided tour of the College’s new £30million facilities and met current Principal, Kate Webb.

Former lecturer Ann Budd, who worked in the Business Studies Department for many years, said: “When I first started teaching at the College in the late 70s, computers were just being introduced so it was a real learning curve for us. We had electronic typewriters back then, one word processor and about 25 BBC computers. There was a real team spirit amongst the staff, with everyone supporting each other and sharing ideas.

“It was great to come back after all these years and see how the College looks now. The restaurant far exceeded my expectations. The food was very good and the students were so professional.”

Pat Roberts, who worked for the College for 22 years, agreed: “I feel I grew and changed along with the College. Working with young people certainly keeps you young. I loved working here and it’s great to see the College is going from strength to strength.”

Shirley Stubbington was one of the first to teach in the Langley College building when it originally opened in 1976. At that time, she was teaching evening classes in secretarial skills and she has fond memories of those days.

“The great thing about Further Education colleges is that you can encourage people of all ages and give them a real future. We had students coming to Langley College from as far away as Cranford Community School.”

The Langley College building has been at the heart of the community since 1976 and currently serves over 2,400 students from the Langley and Slough area. Over the years, the College has continued to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and enhancing its range of courses. Today, Langley College is the centre for most of East Berkshire College’s main vocational courses, which all have specialist facilities. These include Motor Vehicle & Engineering, Construction, Computing, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, Health Care & Education Pathways and Hospitality & Catering.

Bringing the flavours of Spain to local residents, the newly opened Zest restaurant at Langley College held its very first theme night on Thursday (27 March 2014). From Paella to Churros, the Spanish Night saw the College's talented catering students create a delicious range of dishes inspired by classic Spanish cuisine.

Diners at the restaurant, which is now open to the public for bookings, were treated to a mouth-watering menu at a pocket-pleasing price. The menu, which was specially created by Level 3 catering student Layla Jones, offered guests a three-course meal for just £15.

Layla, who was Front of House Manager for the night while fellow student Kate Corbett was Head Chef for the evening, explains: "Spanish night was a great success, with the entire restaurant fully booked. I decided to choose Spanish as my theme because I was inspired by the wide variety of exciting dishes from the country. I'd like to be a head chef in a top restaurant one day, so this event was great experience. It taught us how to work together as a team and under pressure to get the food out on time."

Langley resident Charles Campbell was one of the first diners to book at table at the restaurant for the Spanish night.

"I've been to the restaurant six times now," said Charles. "It's a great asset to Langley and better than many professional restaurants I've been to, including some fine dining ones. The Spanish dishes were very authentic. The paella was particularly good, with plenty of seafood. I enjoyed the evening so much, I've already booked a table for the French night."

Jan Lewington, a local resident and a former chef, agrees: "The food and service is excellent. The garlic prawns I ordered were simply superb. The experience the students are gaining here is much more realistic to real jobs and what is great is that you can see they are really enjoying it."

With an array of mouth-watering Italian dishes to carpentry and hairdressing demonstrations, the Spring Open Day at Langley College was a true feast for all the senses last week. Over 580 prospective students and their families visited the campus to check out the new state-of-the-art learning facilities and find out about over 800 courses.

From engineering to beauty therapy, there was a wide range of demonstrations running throughout the event to entertain and inform visitors. Highlights of the evening included a football skills competition in the College's new Sports Centre and hairdressing students demonstrating some of the latest hairstyling techniques. Meanwhile, catering students showcased their skills by putting on a special pasta night in the College's new Zest restaurant.

Langley residents Genevieve and Randolph Evans booked a table at the new Zest restaurant to take advantage of the College's pasta night.

Randolph said: "This is our second visit to the restaurant now. It is excellent value for money and the standard of food is as good as any commercial restaurant. The students are so polite and professional; they even went out of their way to make Spaghetti Carbonara for us when it wasn't even on the menu."

The Zest restaurant is part of the College's new Hospitality & Catering Academy, which opened in October 2013. In the College's impressive Motor Vehicle & Engineering Department, visitors were able to tour the workshops and observe engineering students at work on the College's new £70,000 CNC milling machine. Plus, current students and staff were on hand to answer questions.

Prospective student Michael Rickford (16, from Hayes) attended the event to find out about courses in engineering.

"I heard about the Open Day at school, so I thought I'd come along and check out the College for myself. I was really impressed with the engineering workshop. I didn't realise how much equipment and machinery you get to use here. Everyone was really helpful too."

East Berkshire College continues to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and is currently undertaking a £30m refurbishment of its Langley College to provide state-of-the-art learning facilities for current and future students. These improvements include a new commercial hair and beauty salons which are due to be completed in early 2014.

East Berkshire College's new look Langley College, which includes a new state-of-the-art Hospitality & Catering Academy, was officially unveiled to the public on Thursday (3rd October 2013).

The official opening ceremony was performed by award-winning chef Tom Kerridge, owner of the two Michelin-starred Hand & Flowers in Marlow. A regular on the BBC's Great British Menu, Tom is also a patron of the new Hospitality & Catering Academy.

Tom, who has a new TV series called Proper Pub Food airing on BBC2, is passionate about inspiring young people. Tom explains: "I am pleased to be able to support East Berkshire College's new Hospitality & Catering Academy. Working with the College is a chance for me to give something back and inspire the next generation of chefs and front of house staff.

"The College's training kitchens are amazing and these students are the future of the catering industry. I started cooking at a young age, but I didn't realise it was the career for me until I went to catering college and got an evening job in a kitchen. Having the right attitude and working hard is the key to success. You have to love what you do!"

The special Open Day event marked the completion of the first phase of a £30m improvement project at Langley College and was attended by local dignitaries, businesses and leading figures from the hospitality and catering world. Guests included award-winning pastry chef Will Torrent (from Iver) as well as prestigious local businesses such as CH&Co, Sir Christopher Wren Hotel & Spa, Stoke Place, Eton College and WPC Inns.

Visitors were able to take a tour of the new state-of-the-art learning facilities, which includes professional training kitchens, a working restaurant, a new Learning Centre, a multi-purpose Sports Centre, new study areas and a new reception area.

Dressed in their chef whites, the College's catering students prepared a delicious selection of canapés for the launch and waited on guests. The budding young chefs even baked a special celebration cake for the occasion.

Student Layla Jones (from Slough), who is studying a Professional Cookery course at the College, was delighted to be part of the event.

"It was such an honour to meet Tom Kerridge and Will Torrent. I'd like to be a head chef in a top restaurant one day, so this event was great experience. It taught us how to work together as a team and under pressure to get the food ready on time. It was an amazing day."

The auspicious event also included the live final of the Berkshire's Best Young Chef competition, which saw six finalists aged 12-19 battle it out in a Masterchef-style cook-off. The six contestants produced some mouth-watering dishes, which were judged by a panel of experts including Tom Kerridge, Will Torrent, David Cavalier from leading contract caterer CH&Co and Tim Cole, Editor of the Slough Observer. Natalie Christovic (15, from Yately) stunned the judges by creating an amazing coconut and chocolate croquembouche (profiterole tower) in 90mins to win the top prize. Meanwhile, Connor Braddick, who is an apprentice chef at Sir Christopher Wren Hotel in Windsor, was victorious in the College's apprentice chef contest.

Will Torrent, who has just published his first book Pâtisserie at Home and recently collaborated with Heston Blumenthal and Royal Chef Mark Flanagan to create the Diamond Jubilee Picnic Hampers, said: "The students at the new Hospitality & Catering Academy at Langley College now have one of the best training facilities in the area - show the kitchen respect and the kitchen will respect you! What a great way to open and show off the new facilities too - the worthy winner, managed to create a wonderfully tasting Croquembouche, something many chefs would shy away from that was simplicity executed perfectly! Well Done!"

Defying the tough economic climate, the hospitality and catering sector continues to thrive and provide a growing range of employment opportunities, both locally and nationally.    


According to a recent report by the British Hospitality Association, hospitality is Britain’s fourth largest industry and was responsible for over one quarter of all new jobs created in the UK from 2010 to 2012.

This is a trend being reflected locally according to East Berkshire College, which currently has over 25 apprenticeship vacancies for budding chefs and front of house staff available at a variety of prestigious hotels, restaurants and gastro pubs in Berkshire.

Angela Coulson, a commercial adviser at the College, said: “With an extensive tourist industry in this area, there are growing opportunities for those looking for a career in the hospitality industry. We are helping an increasing number of local employers to set up apprenticeship schemes to recruit talented individuals, who will grow and develop with their businesses. And many of these employers are recruiting apprentices for the first time.    

“We currently have apprenticeship vacancies at a range of prestigious venues including the Harte & Garter Hotel in Windsor, the River House in Windsor, the Jolly Farmer in Maidenhead and the Michelin starred Royal Oak in Littlefield Green. An apprentice in the kitchen team at the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel in Windsor, Louis Graham (from Reading) knows first-hand the benefits of the apprenticeship scheme.

Louis said: “After finishing school, I decided I wanted to work rather than study full-time. I’ve always loved cooking, so when I saw this job advertised I applied straight away. This is a dream come true to work in such a prestigious restaurant. I’m working towards a qualification, earning money and gaining lots of experience.”

Combining training at a college with practical skills learnt in the workplace, apprenticeships give people the chance to gain job-specific skills, a qualification and work experience. At the same time, they enable businesses to develop new talent, reduce overall training costs and address skills gaps.

With seven venues across Windsor, WPC Inns is one successful pub and restaurant chain which has already recruited seven apprentices through East Berkshire College’s new Hospitality & Catering Academy.

George Robertson, Operations Manager for WPC Inns, explains: “We took on our first apprentice three months ago at the Royal Stag and we now have seven apprentices throughout the business. The apprentices are already having a very positive impact on the team in terms of their enthusiasm and energy. It is a tough world for businesses at the moment, but apprenticeships are a great way to improve staff retention and develop home-grown talent.”

Local businesses, dignitaries and parents were given a flavour of East Berkshire College's new Hospitality & Catering Academy at an exclusive preview launch at Royal Windsor Racecourse on Thursday (8th November 2012).

Among those attending the event were Fiona Mactaggart, MP for Slough, and local businesses from across Berkshire including CH&Co, The Fat Duck, Sir Christopher Wren Hotel, The Harte & Garter Hotel and Aramark.

Guests at the special launch were able to take a virtual tour of the College's professional training facilities, which are due to open at the Langley Campus in autumn 2013, and find out about the College's new range of courses (from professional cookery to front of house).

Caroline Fry, Chief Executive of CH&Co and a patron of the new academy, said: "It is fantastic that this academy has been launched and we are privileged to be involved. Chefs are vital to our business as we are a food from scratch company and we need continuing generations to take career choices in catering. If you have the passion and enthusiasm, you can go far in this industry."

Hospitality and catering students from East Berkshire College are set to benefit from a unique learning experience thanks to an exciting new partnership between the College and Royal Windsor Racecourse.

Ahead of the construction of the College's new training kitchens and restaurant, which is due to open at the Langley Campus in autumn 2013, the first intake of students will start their training this October at the prestigious racecourse. The students will undertake both theory and practical lessons at the venue as well as gaining valuable experience in a real working environment.

Jason Mayhead, Head of Conference Sales and Events at Royal Windsor Racecourse, explains: "We are delighted to be involved with East Berkshire College's new Hospitality & Catering Academy. With the extensive tourist industry in this area, there is a definite need for this kind of training centre.
