Langley College Hairdressing pass their skills onto residents of Langley Haven Care Home

Langley College and Langley Haven Care Home have partnered up to provide hairdressing workshops for the home’s residents. The winning initiative has been designed to enable Hairdressing students to develop their technical skills, working with clients from the local community and for the senior ladies and gentleman to get out and about and interact with younger people.

During the workshops the College’s Level 2 and 3 Hairdressing students and home residents initially spent time getting to know each other. Then, on a one-to-one basis the ladies were taught how to put rollers in and the gentlemen worked with mannequins learning how to do pony tails and rollers.

Organised by Roxana Chirita, Langley Haven Care Home Activities Co-ordinator who commented: “This is the ideal opportunity to get our residents out of the care home, into somewhere different, interacting with new faces and better still, being given the chance to learn something new – it genuinely ticks all the boxes.”

Care Home resident Marcus Hewitt was really pleased with his achievements commenting: ‘I didn’t expect that I will be able to do a ponytail, but I really wanted to get it right! The student was really good, explaining with patience what I had to do and she made me laugh; that helped! I was so proud!”

Linda Roger who was taught how to put rollers in said: “I enjoyed the visit so much! It was something completely different from what we normally do.”

The partnership is equally beneficial to the Hairdressing students with the College’s Hair and Beauty Manager Angel De Franceschi commenting: “Our salons are open to the public offering very affordable hair services and beauty treatments. Working with the ladies and gentleman from the care home is the ideal opportunity for students to perfect their client liaison skills and deepen their learning as on this occasion they were doing the teaching!”

Following the successful hairdressing workshops the Haven Care Home residents enjoyed an afternoon treat prepared by Hospitality students in the onsite restaurant ZEST.

The hairdressing students have been studying at the College since September 2018. Their training involves practical, theory and commercial work and they will be fully qualified to work as professional hairdressers by July 2019.
