It was skills ahoy as East Berkshire College’s annual hairdressing and beauty therapy catwalk show got underway recently at Langley College.

The glamorous display took visitors on a journey through a creative collection of hairstyles and make-up inspired by the 1920s, 1950s and 1980s. Over 150 students from levels one to three took part in the show, with prizes for best make-up and hairstyle in each category.

From an awe-inspiring nautical themed hairstyle (complete with ship) to a 101 Dalmatians creation modelled on villainess Cruella de Vil, there was a magnificent ensemble of hair designs on view to showcase the students’ considerable talents. Meanwhile, beauty therapy students worked their magic to create some elegant makeovers inspired by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and some striking 80s looks.

Janet Yelloly, Director of Curriculum for Creative and Service Industries at East Berkshire College, explains: “Our catwalk show is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their creative talents as well as their technical skills. The standard of work across all areas and year groups was outstanding this year.

“This is the first show we have held since we moved into our brand new salons at Langley College. The students now have more space and a more realistic work environment, with all the latest technology and professional products you’d find in any salon.”

Omid Ali, who is studying for a hairdressing level three course, sailed through to take first prize in the 1950s category with his show stopping ship design. He said: “I’ve been watching the series Hair on TV and I wanted to try something different. It was a real challenge to finish the style in time, but I just managed it. I’m thrilled that all the hard work has paid off.”

Other winners for hairdressing included Ashur Brooks and Abbie Ramsay. Meanwhile, beauty students Miranda Mickeviciute and Vicky Stiles received top honours for their make-up skills.

The new commercial hair and beauty salons are part of East Berkshire College’s £30million makeover of its Langley College. The stunning new salons incorporate professional cutting stations, the latest industry-standard equipment and a new public reception area. As well as being a teaching facility for those studying hair and beauty courses, the salons are open to the public and act as a working business to allow students to train on real customers for an enhanced learning experience.

A range of treatments are on offer to the public (males and females) including hairdressing, massage, make-up, manicures and pedicures. Treatments are priced from £2.00 and are carried out by students under staff supervision. For those interested in booking an appointment at the salon, please call 01753 793246.
