Apprenticeships were top of the menu at a special Business Breakfast for local employers on Thursday (27 February) at East Berkshire College. Celebrating the benefits of employing apprentices, the event was the first in a series of activities to mark National Apprenticeship Week (3-7 March 2014).

A wide range of companies from across the region attended the event including Babcocks Ltd, The Marriott Hotel Group, British Airways, Carlsen Property Maintenance, Lovell and Macdonald Berystede Hotel. The 'Business Breakfast' event provided local organisations with the chance to find out more about the College's new apprenticeship programmes, funding and the benefits of taking on an apprentice.

The event featured a number of short presentations by key speakers such as Amar Gill from British Airways and Ron Vos from The Marriott Hotel Group, both of whom have recruited apprentices through the College. Meanwhile, the College's catering students prepared a delicious buffet breakfast for guests, which included bacon rolls, smoked salmon bagels and handmade pastries.

One of the guest speakers at the event was Amar Gill, IT Apprentice Programme Manager at British Airways. British Airways recognises the benefit of developing new talent and currently has 12 higher apprentices through the College.

"We believe it is important to invest in young people as these apprentices are our future. We chose to work with East Berkshire College because they had experience of delivering Higher Apprenticeships in ICT, could tailor the programme to our needs and we were impressed by the passion of their staff. We are delighted by how quickly our apprentices have developed in the first six months."

Guests were also provided with a tour of the College's excellent facilities including the engineering workshop, which features a state-of-the-art CNC Milling machine, and the new Hospitality & Catering Academy.

East Berkshire College trains hundreds of apprentices every year, in various subjects from IT to professional cookery, and even helps businesses recruit apprentices.

East Berkshire College now offers a wide range of new apprenticeships in areas including Science, IT, Engineering, Business & Administration and Hospitality & Catering. New higher apprenticeships (Level 4) are also available, offering a more affordable and convenient alternative to university and graduate training schemes.
