East Berkshire College has been announced as one of only 21 colleges throughout the country chosen to receive Government funding through the College Capital Investment Fund (CCIF). This latest grant will support the development of a new £5.1m STEM project and research centre at Langley College, which will focus on engineering and construction skills.

Upgrading the College's construction and engineering facilities, the new centre aims to address a skills shortage identified in the UK in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. The facility will provide an enhanced learning experience for students to enable them to develop the specialist skills employers' require.

Principal Kate Webb enthused: "East Berkshire College is delighted to be awarded funding from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) to support the ongoing improvements at our Langley College, which will create state-of-the-art facilities for current and future students. The College continues to invest in its local community and this additional funding will enable us to develop a dynamic STEM centre, which will meet the needs of employers across a wide range of sectors and produce a highly-skilled local workforce for the future."

This latest round of investment by the Government is targeting colleges that can best support growth. Many of the projects receiving funding are for skills training in sectors vital for growing British industry including engineering, construction and automotive.

Skills Minister Matthew Hancock said: "I'm delighted to announce £1.7million in Government funding for East BerkshireCollege to help transform their campus and improve teaching and learning locally."

"The Government is helping to create specialist facilities that will ensure thousands of students get the best possible learning experience and inspire them to reach their potential, while addressing local skills shortages."

"We are making the skills system more rigorous and responsive to the needs of employers, and this funding will help do that."

Langley College has been at the heart of the community since 1976 and is currently undergoing a multi-million pound makeover to provide state-of-the-art facilities to meet the community's current and future learning needs. The first phase of improvement works, which includes a new Hospitality & Catering Academy, began in August 2012 and is now nearing the final stages of construction. Due for completion in August 2013, the academy will feature professional training kitchens and a working restaurant to enable the College to deliver full and part-time courses in hospitality and catering for the first time.

Over the years, the College has continued to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and enhancing its range of courses. In February 2013, Ofsted rated the College as 'good' with outstanding features following a week-long inspection. Alongside other key strengths, the report recognised the real difference the College makes to the lives of its students in terms of their progress, success and employability.
