What's covered?

This pathway is for Early years practitioners who want to improve their skills and knowledge in working with young children whilst staying in their current job and gaining a degree qualification.

Foundation Degrees (FdA) are particularly appropriate for students considering returning to learning after a break or those who have not gained their qualifications through the traditional school-based route.

The course does not qualify you to teach, or confer the title of Early Years Teacher, but is a 'stepping-stone' towards this status.

You would study at the Langley campus of East Berkshire College on a Wednesday between 9.30am - 5.00pm. This Foundation Degree is validated by Bucks New University

What you would study:

Modules for Year 1 - Level 4

  • Personal and Professional Development in Practice (1)
  • The Developing Child -Developing Practice, Play and Playful Pedagogy
  • Team Around The Child and Young Person

Modules for Year 2 - Level 5

  • Personal and Professional Development in Practice (2)
  • Curriculum Principles in Practice
  • Children, Families and Society
  • Inclusion

What do you need?

  • A relevant Level 3 Child Care/ Early Years qualification
  • A minimum of 2 years' relevant experience
  • Current employment in an appropriate setting (for a minimum of 2 days a week)
  • Support of your school or setting
  • Someone to act as your mentor

How you are assessed

Your work will be assessed through essays, reports, presentations, observations and reflective accounts. There are no examinations for this course.

How Long?

The duration of the course is 2 years

What course next?

Successful completion of the foundation degree opens up a number of alternatives to you. You can apply to 'top-up' your qualification to a full BA Hons degree at one of our local universities for example: Bucks New University, University of Reading and the University of West London.

What could this lead to?

Early Years Teacher Status or QTS.
