What's covered?

The Trinity Cert TESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) are the most widely recognised English language teaching qualifications internationally. At East Berkshire College, we have a longstanding reputation for delivering the Cert TESOL.

This is a Level 5 initial teacher training course for those who want to undertake EFL/ESOL training and have little or no experience of teaching English. It is also suitable for teachers of other subjects who would like to take up EFL/ESOL teaching or add it to their range of expertise. The Trinity Cert TESOL will qualify you to teach English as a foreign language to adults both in the UK and abroad.

The training sessions will cover the following topics: language awareness; language acquisition; varieties of English; linguistic analysis; language teaching methodology; lesson planning and assessing students' learning needs. This is a very practical course through which you will learn to evaluate and modify your teaching practice. You will do this through observing teachers and teaching students from Beginner to Advanced language levels in our Ofsted Outstanding ESOL department. Candidates must be available for lesson observations and teaching practice which take place in addition to the taught sessions.

What do you need?

Candidates must be at least 18 years old at the start of the course, have a good standard of education (two A Levels or equivalent) and have a good standard of oral and written competence.

You will be asked to attend an interview, which normally takes about an hour.

How you are assessed

Candidates must complete a number of pieces of written work. All Teaching Practice is assessed, and there is a language/knowledge of grammar test.

All work is submitted for moderation by an external assessor.

How Long?

23 weeks

What course next?

On completion of this initial teacher training course, you will need to gain teaching experience before pursuing the next stage of your teacher training. This could be via a number of routes depending on the context in which you work, for example: through the UK Education and Training or PGCE qualifications, or through completing the internationally recognised Trinity Diploma TESOL or Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults).

What could this lead to?

Trainees who have successfully completed this course have gone on to teach EFL or ESOL in the UK or abroad, work as Teaching Assistants supporting EAL (English as an Additional Language) in primary schools or work as private language tutors.
