What's covered?
All Apprenticeships consist of a Framework of different elements. They must include qualifications that, when achieved, prove the Apprentice's competence in carrying out work of the Level and type identified in the Framework. Also included must be qualifications which demonstrate the technical knowledge of the job and industry, plus more wide ranging general skills required to operate successfully in the trade; these will include Maths, English and, if appropriate, ICT and Employer Rights and Responsibilities.
The different elements can be combined in one qualification, or be covered in separate qualifications, but all elements must be achieved to obtain a full Apprentice Certificate. This level 3 NVQ Advanced Apprenticeship gives you expert level training in a vast range of advanced hairdressing techniques and services. Structurally, you will study a total of nine mandatory units, which involve theory and practical classes, tutorial sessions and individual & group workshops.
Core units for this course include:
- Ensure your actions reduce risks to Health & Safety
- Promote additional products or services to clients
- Provide hairdressing consultation services
- Create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques
Optional
- Style and dress hair to achieve a variety of creative hairdressing skills
- Style and dress long hair
- Provide colour correction services
- Perm hair using a variety of techniques
- Support customer service improvements
- Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
- Colour hair using a variety of techniques. On completing this course our hairdressers are able to carry out supervisory, training and management skills in a wide range of hairdressing related activities.
What do you need?
Applicants must have NVQ level 2 hairdressing and experience in industry or recent salon experience - minimum of three years.
How you are assessed
During your study you will be assessed at various stages, to ensure that you gain vital knowledge at a healthy pace. The assessments are a mixture of observations and online assessments.

What could this lead to?
After successfully completing this course you will be able to advance to a level 4 Technical Salon Management course, or move into teaching or training. Alternatively you may wish to become self-employed, find work aboard or become a salon stylist or assessor.
