What's covered?

You will gain the skills you need to be qualified as a junior men's hairdresser/barber. You will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to consult and advise with male clients on hair and facial hair grooming.

You will cover a wide range of units including:

  • Health and safety
  • Client consultation
  • Shampoo and conditioning hair
  • Working in the hair industry
  • Basic cutting hair
  • Cutting facial hair
  • Styling men's hair

What do you need?

You will need Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 1 and will also need to be well presented, practical and well organised and willing to dedicate a minimum of 3-4 days per week to the course.

How you are assessed

You will be assessed through observed work on clients, audio visual media, written work and online tests, assignments and case studies.

What could this lead to?

Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council

Career opportunities as a junior men's hairdresser exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Commercial barbershops/salons
  • Specialist African type hair barbershops/salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • Product manufacturing and training
  • Television, film, theatre and media
  • Armed services
  • Cruise liners

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare you for employment within the hairdressing industry as a unisex hairdresser or barber, you may choose to develop your skill base further by undertaking specialist qualifications at Level 3
