Course Overview

This full time course opens up a range of career opportunities in the science industry, as well as entry on to both science and non-science degree courses. It is a nationally recognised qualification that explores biology, chemistry and physics and is valued by both employers and admission officers in higher education. Topics include human physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and electronics.

Instruction includes both theory and practical sessions, which develop both the knowledge and laboratory skills needed to succeed in the science workplace or HE. Examples of units covered include Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Biomedical Science Techniques and Practical Chemical Analysis

Entry Requirements

Requires four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and combined science at grade 5 or a Level 2 BTEC science at merit.

Course information

In class, face to face.

Largely coursework, (including practical work) that is often carried out under controlled conditions in class. Some of this is internally assessed by your teachers and some is externally moderated by the exam board. At present there are no compulsory examined units. There is one externally marked examination and one externally marked unit in each year of the programme.

Level 3 EDEXCEL BTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science

During your two years of study you will undertake a work placement. You will also hear from a variety of industry speakers, visit careers’ fairs and attend workshops, trips and visits.

Students can seek employment in science related fields. Alternatively, they progress onto science and non-science related degree courses in HE. Examples of possible degree pathways include biomedical, pharmacy, nursing, criminology or pure science.
