In a bid to bring fresh talent into the hospitality sector and discover future stars, the London Heathrow Marriott Hotel and Heathrow Windsor Marriott Hotel are working closely with East Berkshire College to provide fantastic apprenticeship opportunities for young people.

As a leading hotel group, the Marriott recognises the benefit of investing in recruiting and developing new talent. The London Heathrow Marriott and Heathrow Windsor Marriott are currently employing apprentice chefs and apprentice maintenance technicians to support its kitchen and maintenance teams in delivering a high quality service to guests.

The apprentices study for one day a week at East Berkshire College in Langley, and spend the rest of the time gaining experience and training in the workplace. For employers like the Marriott, apprenticeships are a great way to develop a skilled and motivated workforce, ensuring there are no future skills gaps.

Linda Hawkins, Multi Property Director of Human Resources at London Heathrow and Heathrow Windsor Marriott Hotels, explains: “We believe firmly in developing local talent and apprenticeships have been a key initiative for us over the last few years, especially in terms of attracting young chefs. As part of the scheme, our apprentices are supported by a mentor and given the chance to attend specialist workshops across the UK. We also hold an internal competition for our apprentice chefs, with the best going through to a UK final and European final to showcase their skills.

“East Berkshire College have been exceptional in supporting our apprenticeship scheme, helping us find the right candidates and providing us with regular updates on their progress. I would certainly recommend other businesses use their local college to recruit and train local people. The training facilities at Langley College are amazing. In fact, the standard of food in the College’s Zest restaurant is that good, our entire management team had our Christmas lunch their last year.”

As part of the Marriott’s apprenticeship scheme, the apprentice chefs have the chance to work in different areas of the hotel, including the main restaurant, the grill, banqueting and room service. What is more, the company also provides additional learning experiences at its other hotels.

Apprentice chef Callum Farrant enthused: “The Marriott and the College have been so supportive. I love everything about my apprenticeship, from preparing desserts for the hotel’s executive lounge to studying one day a week at college. I really feel like part of the team here and I’ve learnt so much already. I’ve even had the chance to go to Scotland for a few days to learn about sourcing and preparing meat and fish as part of my job.”

Anthony Ladipo (aged 20), an apprentice maintenance technician with the company, has also made a big impression since he joined the team at the Marriott Hotel in Langley. As well as helping maintain the superior standards of the hotel’s 393 rooms, he has been nominated as associate of the quarter several times and is now the face of the Marriott’s apprenticeship video.

“When I finished school, I didn’t want to go to university and get into debt,” said Anthony. “I thought it would be good to learn a trade and an apprenticeship is a great way to do that and build a career. I feel I’ve really grown up. I’m now earning money, I have a pension and I hope to become a qualified engineer within the next two years.”

As well as the more traditional trade-based apprenticeships, East Berkshire College offers a range of apprenticeships in areas such as Business Administration, Accounting, Science, Engineering and Hospitality & Catering. An increasing range of new higher apprenticeships (Level 4) are also available, offering a more affordable and convenient alternative to university.
