What's covered?

All Apprenticeships consist of a Framework of different elements. They must include qualifications that, when achieved, prove the Apprentice's competence in carrying out work of the Level and type identified in the Framework. Also included must be qualifications which demonstrate the technical knowledge of the job and industry, plus more wide ranging general skills required to operate successfully in the trade; these will include Maths, English and, if appropriate, ICT and Employer Rights and Responsibilities.

The different elements can be combined in one qualification, or be covered in separate qualifications, but all elements must be achieved to obtain a full Apprentice Certificate. To achieve an apprenticeship in Accounting Level 2, you must complete a minimum of 10 credits for the Technical Certificate (knowledge qualification) and a minimum of 17 credits for the Certificate in Accounting NVQ Level 2 (competency qualification) plus Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English (unless you already have exemptions from these with previous qualifications).

Mandatory units for the Technical Certificate include:

  • Principles of recording and processing financial transactions
  • Banking procedures
  • Basic principles of costing.

Mandatory units for the Level 2 NVQ include:

  • Preparing and recording financial documents
  • Maintaining and reconciling a cash book
  • Maintaining a journal
  • Maintaining petty cash records.

What do you need?

Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics give exemption from Functional Skill credits, whilst previous experience of accounts is not essential applicants must like working with numbers and be able to demonstrate the potential for developing good communication skills.

Your employer would be expected to train and support you in the workplace so you have the experience to be competent in all of the mandatory and chosen optional units.

How you are assessed

The qualification is assessed in the workplace. Methods include observation, work product evidence, oral presentation and questioning. In some circumstances, units may be accredited from prior learning or assessed by workplace simulation

Up to 12 months.

Level 3 NVQ Diploma or Apprenticeship in Accounts.

What could this lead to?

Further employment opportunities in current or alternative job role including the following job roles: trainee accountant, trainee accounting technician.
